San Pedro Arriba Chapel


History



For a famous and ancient tradition of Guimar, in even years main feast is organized by the neighborhood above the town. For those years the venerated image of St. Peter the Apostle could spend the night in that neighborhood in the evening before her feast, the villagers of San Pedro Arriba erected a chapel in honor of the patron, as had previously the underdogs, and 12 May 1794 its founders, led by the Delgado family-Trinidad, asked the bishop Tavira a license for his blessing, forcing in a pool with all your assets and income, both for themselves and for their heirs and successors, to endow decency to hold it at all times be retained with the utmost cleanliness. Once granted the license by the prelate, on June 26, immediately signed the deed of endowment of goods and, after finding that he was provided with the necessary ornaments, on 28 July was blessed by Florentin server benefited Nunez and Torres, who celebrated the first Mass there. Since then, the chapel has continued to provide the service for which it was conceived.

It is a square building, about 45 m2, with masonry walls and hipped roof, a half point in front of stone and a wooden porch supported by thin pillars of the same material as an extension of the facade. It has interior walls covered with frescoes that allude to the theological virtues, the symbols of the Passion and the arms of St. Peter. It has been carefully restored by their butlers and several times in the neighborhood of that sector of Guimar, parish and city hall. And on 21 February 2006 was declared a Cultural Monument by category.

The movable heritage


Inside, we must highlight the picture of the Chair of St. Peter, anonymous eighteenth century, who long presided over the chapel. He belonged to the old altarpiece, but forced to withdraw its deterioration. The painting was restored by Elisa Campos Domínguez in 1995.

In the late nineteenth century, the Madrid painter Ubaldo Bordanova Moreno made the mural paintings that represent the theological virtues, Faith, Hope, and Charity, known for their attributes and colors, which adds the papal miter and keys of San Peter and the sword of St. Paul, patron saints to whom the chapel hosts the night of June 27 of even years.

In 1956 it was bought the carving of St. Peter, known as El Chiquito (Shorty), it is a replica of the patron saint of 45cm by the La Orotava sculptor Ezequiel de León.

The wood scuplture of Lord Bound to the Column reached Güímar in 1960 at the initiative of Nicanor Rivera Gonzalez, who managed to delude the whole neighborhood to assist in the acquisition of this image. Workshop came from the Valencian artist Miguel Espuig, that true to the Seville of Pedro Roldan who is in the church of San Juan de La Orotava, carved in wood when the flogging.

In 2003 and following the implementation of the new altar that houses the painting of the Chair by the cabinetmaker Pedro Perez Diaz was decided to increase the assets of the chapel with the size of a "dolorosa" that processions with the Lord Bound to the Column. This Marian image is known as the Virgin of the Waters, by the importance it had water and its use throughout history in the neighborhood. The Virgin of the Waters was executed by Córdoba sculptor Francisco Romero Zafra in 2006, carving classicist who communes with the stylistic characteristics of the Lord Bound to the Column.

La Fiesta de San Pedro


The feast of St. Peter the Apostle, Patron Saint of Guimar is held in even years in the neighborhood of San Pedro Arriba.

On June 27 the images of Saints Peter and Paul go in procession to the chapel, adorned with a rainbow of fruits and paper decorations made by neighbors, accompanied by the "Danza de San Pedro Arriba" . Images spend the night in the Chapel, where on 28 June return to the Church of San Pedro to celebrate the main day, June 29.

Odd years that the festival is celebrated in June the district of San Pedro Abajo, is celebrated in the Chapel a minor feast in honour of San Pedro el Chiquito.
